Thinking about adding big fans to your facility? Here's the straight-talk guide we wish every operations manager had before they bought — how HVLS fans work, how to size them, what the codes require, and the questions to ask before you sign anything.

The Basics

What Is an HVLS Fan?

HVLS stands for high-volume, low-speed. Instead of blasting a narrow, fast stream of air like a drum or pedestal fan, an HVLS fan uses a large-diameter blade set (typically 6 to 24 feet) turning slowly to move a huge column of air gently down to the floor, where it spreads out in every direction and circulates back up — a continuous, stable loop that covers the whole room.

Summer: one slow-moving air column cools the whole floor.

Because the air moves across your skin, it speeds up evaporation and makes people feel roughly 8–10°F cooler — without actually lowering the room temperature or running more AC.

In winter the same fan runs slow to do the opposite job: it pushes the warm air that's stacked up at the ceiling back down to where people are working. That's called destratification, and it's where a lot of the heating savings come from.

Getting It Right

Sizing & Coverage

One big fan can cover an enormous area — up to about 20,000 sq ft — replacing a dozen or more small fans. But the right size depends on your ceiling height, bay layout, racking, and obstructions. These are rough rules of thumb to frame the conversation, not a substitute for a real site evaluation.

Ceiling height matters. HVLS fans do their best work with 16-ft or taller ceilings. The practical minimum is about 10–12 ft, and a good rule is that the fan's diameter shouldn't be larger than its mounting height above the floor.
How It Hangs

Mounting Methods

We don't fabricate proprietary mounts — we install the manufacturer's mounting hardware to whatever structure your building gives us. Every building is different, so the first thing we figure out on a site visit is exactly what we're hanging from. The most common are:

Whatever the structure, the work is done to the manufacturer's mounting requirements — no guesswork. For spans under eight feet we build the support from 3″ × 3″ × ¼″ steel angle, and everything gets Grade 8 fasteners (or the approved equivalent for the material we're anchoring into). Add the proper safety cabling and clean alignment, and you've got a mount that holds true for years.

Running the Fan

Controls & Integration

Most big fans run on a variable-frequency drive (VFD) that ramps the motor up and down smoothly and lets you dial in exact speeds. Beyond a simple wall control, fans can tie into:

  • Temperature & humidity sensors for automatic speed
  • Building management systems (BMS) for central control
  • Fire-alarm interlock to shut down on a sprinkler signal
  • Forward/reverse scheduling for summer and winter modes
Don't Skip This

Codes & Safety

If your building has fire sprinklers — and most commercial buildings over 5,000 sq ft do — there are real code requirements for installing a big fan beneath them. Under NFPA 13 (the sprinkler standard), the key rules for HVLS fans are:

CEILING / DECK ≥ 3 ft Centered between 4 sprinklers · ≤ 24 ft diameter Must shut OFF on sprinkler waterflow
NFPA 13 fan-under-sprinkler requirements.
  • Maximum fan diameter of 24 ft
  • Fan centered between four adjacent sprinklers
  • At least 3 ft of clearance from blade to sprinkler deflector
  • Interlocked to shut down automatically on a sprinkler waterflow signal (per NFPA 72)
Why it matters: a spinning fan can disrupt how sprinkler water reaches a fire, so the shut-off interlock is a life-safety requirement — not an optional add-on. We wire it in as part of the install. Also look for the AMCA Certified Ratings seal, which means a fan's airflow and efficiency numbers were independently verified, and UL 507 for electrical safety. Always confirm requirements with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Before You Buy

Questions to Ask

Run through these before you commit to any fan or installer — they'll save you headaches and surprise costs:

  • How tall are my ceilings, and what will the fan hang from (I-beam, truss, purlin, wood, concrete, chain)?
  • Do I have sprinklers? If so, is the fan sized and wired to meet NFPA 13 and shut off on waterflow?
  • How many fans do I need, and what square footage will each actually cover in my layout?
  • What power is available at the install location — voltage and phase?
  • How will I control it — wall unit, sensors, BMS, winter reverse mode?
  • Are the performance numbers AMCA-certified, or just marketing claims?
  • What's the warranty, and who services the fan after the sale?
  • Will I use it year-round for winter destratification, not just summer cooling?
